Task 3 - Star Image In Music Video

Star image in a music video is very important for some artists.

For example, take Kyle Minogue who began as an actress for the soap 'Neighbours'

image

Her pop career began in 1987.

Her star image was constantly re-invented through concerts, music videos, and her songs. When Kyle first started her career as an artist her target audience where 11-13 year old girls.

This is one of her songs from her early career:

She had the innocent girl next door look where she hardly wore much make-up and didn't wear provocative clothing. She was continued to be portrayed as this innocent young girl in her music videos through the use of mise en scene and the lyrics of the song.

About 10 year later during her career, in the early 90's, Kylie Minogue's  target audience changed to older teens, both girls and boys. She started to appear more glamorous and sophisticated in her videos in a sexual way so that she was admired by her target audience of girls, and attracted to by the boys.

This is one of her songs from later in her career where this is shown:

Things like the red lips exaggerate the new sexual side of Kylie in this video.

As Kylie began to attract a wider and more defined audience as she grew, her star image became more apparent.

Music Video Group Discussion

In our music video we are trying to convey the star image as been dark and gothic like, strange and unusual.

These are some images of jelousy, surrealism, freaks, weird, abnormality and sexual innuendos that we are using for inspiration for our video.

We then looked at the mood board for another song we could use. This is the song :

This song we would like to take a more happy and sweet image too. This is our mood board for the song:

Our group decided we liked the gothic dark look in our music video. This is a mood board for the song Running up that hill:

Discussing Music Video

This year in media we are told that we are going to create and film a music video. We got in groups and started to discuss ideas we had, songs we liked and how we can work together. I am in a group with Ollie Baynham, Plum O'Keefe, and Sienne. We together came up with a list of songs that we liked and thought would be good to use for our video. We tried to use artists that wearnt that well known in the music industry. To do this we had to stear away from the mainstream charts and look deeper into Youtube to find a song that we could create and music video to that wouldnt already have a proffesionally made one.

Here are our list of song choices :

We initially began to brainstorm ideas for the song Running Up That Hill. We looked at the lyrics and thought we could have a creepy feel about a girl that is jelous of someone, such as there ex boyfriends new girlfriend. This fitted with the words well and the song also sounds creepy and 'dark' which would fit to the imagery we were begining to form.

Here are a list of some ideas we were thinking about :

My Literal Video

We made our own literal video through changing the lyrics of the song to match what was happening with the visuals. We used Toxic by Britney Spears.

This is the original..

And this was our literal video..

Im picking phone and im calling
Im getting naked and im posing
I take champagne and put it back

Im pushing trolley, look at my face
Im naked, your pants are wet
Im sorry, ill clean that up
Head shoulders knees and toes
I love kids with cute afros
Do you like my nails?

Now im pushing you in the toilet
There are fans in the room and I like it
You are throwing soap when im crawling
Then I take your mask off, and my body is in diamons
And im wiping my ass all over your trousers

My hair is red and im in Paris
I took a ride, and revved up
Im massaging arms of naked man
Wind blows through my hair
There is close up of me again
Look at me now

Now im flying like im a spiderman
But first its time some press ups
