Evaluation Task 6: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

We added annotations onto the clip to show the process and effects of using technology in our media peice.

Evaluation Task 5: How did you attract / address your target audience

This will attract the audience because the words ‘a man has been killed’ appear on the screen. This draws attention in as the words are powerful. The media product is also the news, what the main character is watching. This is real life on TV; this allows the audience to realize the importance of the rioting and how dangerous it is. This will grip them into the film. Our target audience being 15-18 year old youths would be interested in the tension of death. Our secondary target audience of elder people interested in today’s society would find this appealing. This is because it would trigger memories of the time when the news was about the riots and how awful they were.  This shot also gives a sense of foreboding that something bad is going to happen, making the audience wonder what is going to happen.

In this shot we used a focus pull to connect the main character to the rioting news on the computer by using the reflect ion in the mirror. This could draw the audience in, as it could make them feel that something was going to happen between the rioting and the main character.

This would appeal to the target audience because they can relate to the man if they were involved in the rioting. He is wearing black hoodie which is very stereo typical of someone that is going to do something bad. The audience could realize at this point that the character is going to get involved in the riots. The target audience of 15-18 youths that may have been involved in the riots themselves could see themselves in the main characters position throughout the movie, although our main character is a slightly exaggerated version of the majority of the rioters.

This shot from the opening title sequence is of the main character picking up a rag and a bottle of petrol. This makes the audience want to know what is going to happen next, and what he is going to use the petrol for.  Another extreme close up shot is used to reinforce this idea to the audience of a close up of the rag and petrol as the man walks along the street. This could be seen as ‘hard’ to the youths of today as if the main character has no feelings and is just bored and has no reason for what he is doing

The reinforcement of the petrol and rag builds up tension in the audience.

This shot shows the use of phones that were used during the rioting. The mobile phone could be used for twitter, texting or facebook. These types of sites were used a lot during the riots to connect between people. This also shows the audience the mix of gender in the riots. That girls were included in it as well, which will attract the female audience more to the movie. The main character walking past, taking no notice of the girl also exaggerates that he doesn’t care about other people surrounding him and nothing will stop him, continuing to reinforce the idea that he is powerful and ‘hard’.

This would attract the target audience because they can understand why the character had a petrol can and rag and now are worried for him that something could go wrong, for example he could get caught and go to prison, or that he could kill someone which would link to the shot of the news where the writing said someone had been killed. This technique would be foreshadowing.

The explosion at the end releases the tension of the first title sequence as to what the main character was doing. But it adds a new tension and story that will make the audience want to continue to watch. They will want to know what happens to the man now. An explosion is also an affect which youths would be attracted to as you do not see this everyday. The main character walking away in a calm manor, with a slight smile on his face also continues to present the idea that he is very dangerous and has no feelings of guilt. The target audience that want to know more about society and why people rioted would find this intrigueing as to why he doesnt care.

Evaluation Task 4: Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience we are targeting for our film would be someone with the following characteristics:

  • 15-18 year olds
  • Youth
  • British
  • People who did riot (could learn from the film and change there ways as in the film the main character becomes a better person in the prison)
In general i think the target audience is quite specific in the world, because it is British youths. We dont believe that the film would become worldwide as the film is too low concept and the cinema releases would be very few, with them definitely not releasing globaly. However, in the British society the target audience is less specific as it is the majority of the youth that we are targetting in our audience.

There could also be a secondary market of people with  different characterists:
  • Interested in today's soceity
  • People who want to know about the rioters, as its from the rioters side of the story they will gain more knowlege what made them do it. Such as boredom.
  • White liberals
This secondary market are less stereotypical for the  film. This would probably be an older audience who are interested in the different background of peoples lives. However, this market audience would be minority compared to the youths.

Evaluation Task 3: What kind of media institution might distribute my media product and why?

Our opening title sequence is a about a hooded youth, who blows a car up during the London riots. The film consists of the following of the man's life as he goes to prison for man slaughter of a child in the car at the time. The film represents urban youth.  Similar films to this are 'Shank' 'Anovahood' 'Adulthood' 'Kidulthood' and 'Sket'. The films  'Shank' 'Sket' and 'Anovahood' were produced by two company's named Gungslinger and Gateway films. This is the type of production company that would produce a film like ours. We think our film would appeal to the same target market as the films produced by Gunslinger and Gateway films, so they would be helpful in getting our film noticed in the market.

http://www.gunslingerfilms.com/about/

http://www.gateway-films.com/

Gunslinger and Gateway films both produce films similar to our opening title sequence. They spotted a gap in the Uk urban youth market, and both produce films within this categorie. The film would be made low concept, with no recognisable actors and a low budget for the making of the movie.

Gunslinger is a standalone production company, so works with the distribution company Revolver Entertainment. This company has distributed movies which we looked at as similar to ours such as 'Kidulthood'. Revolver Entertainment is a leading independents, award winning, all rights distributor. However, the budget will still be relatively low compared to a production and distribution company such as Warner Brothers. The film's distributed are low concept films with not very recognisable actors. The three films similar to ours, distributed by this company appeared in cinemas, which would be very good for our movie to get it noticed. However, the company has operations in London and Los Angeles only, so the film wouldnt be able to appear in cinemas all around the world. Their films were also released on DVD and BlueRay with good sales. To market our film we will put the film out on x-box, a trailor on youtube, and use social networking to get our name out as it is our first film to our specific target custumer. The type of audience we are aiming at would play X-box, use social networking and YouTube so would see the name of our film. Getting the name out there before the Cinema and DVD release would raise awarness for the film and get more youths waiting for the films release date.

We would need to try stop pirate copys from happening from our movie. Smaller company's are affected more by this as the income is not as high as that of a production company like Warner Brothers. If people pirate copied a movie like ours we would lose a large amount of revenue, meaning it would be hard to pay the cast  and not much profit would come out of the movie, as we wouldnt be able to cover costs.

Evaluation Task 2: How does your product represent paticular social groups?

Our product has taken something that has really happened in the world and recreated it from one persons perspective, and one persons fictional story of what happened during the riots. Becuase the London riots did happen not too long ago, there is a paticular social group that still exists. The social group we aimed to create in our film are the younger part of society that that would riot because of either boredom or because of gang culture peer pressuring them to, or because they feel they need to take things from shops because they can not afford them. The stereotypical social group that would do this, would normally wear tracksuits, a hood and possibly be carrying a weapon. The sort of group we were aiming to represent were dissaffected youths. These people dont have access to employment, could be drug users, or could have dropped out of school. This could all leed to boredom, which can lead to things such as rioting to pass time and create an adrenaline rush.

This is the type of social group we were representing in our thriller

The social group we are representing usually is recognisable as someone up to no good. The type of clothing they wear; for example, their hood up, or a balaclava on, is a way of loosing their identity in society. This can make people feel uneasy and scared as soon as they see someone dressed this way. We dressed our main character up to look like he was part of this social group. We also tried to show this throught the shots we chose. For example some shots where used to cover the identity of the main character. This shot below the hand is in the way of his face. This represents that this social group feel they have no place in society, aswell as how they hide their identity so that the things they do, such as blowing up cars dont seem as bad. It also makes the audience feel uneasy as you cant see the mans face in the shots yet. This is similar to what the hood and balaclava do.

This shows the amount of rioting that went on with the real social group in London that we were recreating in our media product.

Account of Editing Process

Final-Cut-Pro-logo.pngAfter our shoot day we started editing using Final Cut Pro. As we had previously used this software for our prelim task we already had a basic idea of how to use it. Before we started making a sequence of clips, we had to watch each individual one to see what we had caught on film. We labeled our clips different colours, representing different qualities of clips. The clips we liked the most we labeled red, these ones we were more likely to use in our thriller. The orange clips were good but not our favourites. We could use these as back up if the red ones didn't look good together. Lastly, blue were the clips that we didn't think went right on the day and we were not going to use in our thriller. Even though we didn't plan on using these shots, we didn't delete them. We were told to never delete any of our clips, as we could need a shot from one later on.

After we labeled our clips we then began to put them together. We did this roughly at first so we had the basic storyline. Once we had done this we began to add in shots which made the sequence look more interesting such as close ups and focus pulls. We also smoothened it all out so that the clips were cutting at the correct time. We stopped jump cuts from happening. This is when to shots of the same subject, are take from a camera position which varies only slightly. This can confuse the audience and doesn't look correct in a sequence.

I found the most difficult part of editing was adjusting the audio in the thriller. We had to double up audio so that our thriller would have surround sound. We also added multiple audio face transitions. This was all very difficult and was a long process, however it was very necessary to ensure the audio sounded smooth.
We also imported some sounds from Soundtrack pro, for example a police car siren. We used a sound bridge to link the flat and the outside riots together. We did thisby creating increasing the volume when the scene cut to our main character walking outside.
SoundtrackPro_clapper-thumb-300x314-thumb-300x314.gif

Once we had sorted out the clips and the audio, we then moved into after affects. In after affects we changed the lighting of the thriller to make it seem darker. We also added the explosion at the end. This was very difficult because we had to use trackers to that it was only the car that blew up. Trackers took a long time to place in the correct position, to ensure we got the best possible outcome. We also tried to make our car look burnt, with glass shattered in Photoshop. We would use this so that after the explosion the car looked like it had actually been affected. Once we tried this out, we came to the conclusion it only made the thriller look less professional. So we decided to cut the explosion half way through so the audience never sees the affect it had on the car.

After this was done, we added our titles in such as the costume designer, the producer, directer. Once this was all finished we looked over our thriller to see if there were any corrections that we needed to make. As we had been looking at our own thriller for so long it would be difficult to notice if we had made any mistakes. So we asked people from other groups to view our thriller as well. This gave us an outlook from other peoples perspectives. We cleaned our thriller up, and then made it HD so that the thriller was in a higher quality.

Although this was a long and tiring process, i am extremely happy with our thriller and i feel it is noticeable how much i have learnt about editing since the prelim task.

Account of Shoot Day

red+head+lights.jpg
IMG-20120125-00198.jpg

The shooting day was successful however not everything we planned to do was carried out. We first went to turrets house with our main character and the props neccesary. We set up what we wanted our location to look like using our props. We arranged the room differently so that we could get the shots we wanted. Before we started shooting we adjusted the lighting in the room, using a colour sheet so that it gave a different affect to the shot. We then gave each other different roles, for example one person would think of what shot they wanted to get and set it up by focusing the camera, another would set the tripod up by bubbling it, locking it and moving it into position, and another would role the camera. We rotated these roles so we each got a feel for everything. We filmed close up shots of the face by using a tripod to keep the camera still, trying not to show his whole face at all times.

IMG-20120125-00197.jpgSo either having his hands covering, or using focus pulls so that you didnt see his face to long. This went with the idea that when your in a riot you dont want anybody to know who you are. We used a focus pull from his face to the tv, and another from his face to the computer, with the rioting news up on both. This meant that the focus would change from his face to the background, relating him and the riots together. This could give an idea to the audience that he may get involved. We left the turrets when we felt we had enough shots to choose from.

Waverley-20120125-00201.jpgAfter the first half of our day we started filming in the car park in Hurtwood. We hand held the camera during this as it showed he was on the move, and added a different affect. As we were surrounded by trees, trying to pull of that we were in London. We had to use close up shots. I think we did this successfully. We tried running with the camera next to our main character. We also tried running next to a another rioter, who was carrying boxes that would give the idea of a riot. We filmed people in the background, and we each made an appearance in the thriller opening title sequence.  We used a GoPro Camera, sticking this to the car so that water would splash in the camera lens, as the camera is water proof. We also attached this mini camera onto the petrol can. We thought this may get some interesting shots. Before the day we had planned on using a lot of characters running past. Either being other rioters, or just passers by rushing to their homes. However, when the day came we felt too many people running about would only look silly. Finally we took a shot in slow motion of our character walking away from the car. We were going to add the explosion into the background of this shot, so we had to make sure that the main character wasn't always in the way of the car. If he was, then this would make it hard to make the explosion when we got round to editing. As it would mean we would of had to cut around the main characters body.

Overall i was happy with the day and was excited to see what the shots looked like in the editing suit.

Target Audience for Thriller

The target audience is always important to think about as you try to communicate to that particular type of person whilst advertising and trying to sell the film. My group have decided the audience for our thriller would be 15-18 year olds.

These are the target audience because it is about the youth in our society nowadays. It might appeal mainly to struggling youths who are uneducated and have nothing to do with their time, so result into doing things like joining in with the London Riots. I also think that the target audience would be less well off people, as they want to join in to fit in with their gang members, or to steal something they wouldn’t normally be able to afford. These teenagers would be able to relate more the movie, and their personal experiences could mean they expect something out of the movie. The film could also teach about the affects of doing things like rioting and what it can lead to in your life. However, as well as less fortunate teenagers. I also think that the more educated, and the better off people within the age bracket of 15-18 could also be attracted to a film like this as they can be introduced to a different lifestyle but however, would not benefit from it like the others, other then being an entertaining and thought provoking film
